What is Tarot?

According to the official description Tarot is a card game that is used for card readings and for fortune telling. This is true, but is doesn't quite nail it.

Tarot card readings are best seen as a way to gain insight into various aspects of everyday life using symbolic cards. You may use Tarot cards if you want to gain insight into issues concerning love, work, the mind or your own personal development. Further reading >>>


The Minor Arcana

The Tarot deck consists of two distinct parts: the Major Arcana (22 cards) and the Minor Arcana (56 cards). Arcana is a Latin word, which literally means 'secret'. Tarot cards thus hide greater and smaller secrets. The 22 cards of the Major Arcana are archetypal trump cards, which symbolise major events and experiences.

The Minor Arcana stands for everyday life and symbolises relatively mundane events. The Minor Arcana is divided into 16 court cards (King, Queen, Knight and Page) and 40 numbered suit cards: from ace to ten. Further reading >>>

The origins of Tarot

Much is being said on the origins of Tarot. Some say Tarot has its origin in India and was brought to Western Europe by gypsies. The Major Arcana

The Major Arcana is a suit of twenty-two cards in the Tarot deck. Most people see the Major Arcana as symbolic for the various stages in human life on earth: from the moment of birth to the moment of death.
